This work employs a rare mixed-media process of acrylic and oil on Xuan paper, a technically demanding combination seldom seen in the global art world.
Xuan paper — known for its absorbent, delicate fiber structure — is a traditional Eastern medium for ink painting, while acrylic and oil belong to the Western system of textured pigment painting.

Through years of experimentation, Liu Xiaoning achieved harmony between these contrasting materials by:

• Pre-treating the paper to hold layered pigments without distortion;

• Balancing pigment viscosity and moisture to preserve both texture and luminosity;

• Allowing the paper’s breathability and the paint’s material depth to coexist in one unified expression.

The result is a refined fusion of Eastern subtlety and Western painterly strength, revealing both cultural and technical sophistication.
