馮華飛丨FENG HUAFEI
Huafei Feng is a Chinese contemporary abstract artist. He graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing with a degree in Public Art (2014–2018) and has since dedicated himself fully to studio practice.
His work takes the brushstrokes of Chinese calligraphy as its core visual language. By deconstructing and reassembling the forms of Chinese characters, he transforms thousands of years of written tradition into a bold, contemporary abstract expression. Vivid color breaks open the black-and-white framework of classical calligraphy, creating a distinctive dialogue between Eastern heritage and Western abstraction.
Artistic Vision
At the heart of Feng's practice lies a single question: Where does writing end and painting begin?
He extracts brushstrokes from ancient Chinese calligraphy — not as borrowed ornament, but as a deep return to cultural roots, reimagined for today. Layered with rich color, these gestures build compositions that feel at once deeply Chinese and universally resonant.
His work also speaks to a profoundly human concern: in an age of information overload, language — our most fundamental tool of connection — is constantly being fragmented, misread, and reassembled. Feng gives visual form to this breakdown, inviting viewers across cultures to reflect on the true nature of how we communicate.
Major Series
Calligraphy & Painting Series (2022) Abstract oils rooted in calligraphic gesture, exploring the fluid boundary between writing and painting.
Pre-Qin Dynasty Series (2022) Inspired by China's earliest civilization, tracing the primal forms of Chinese characters and ancient culture.
Peach Blossom Spring Series (2025) Named after Tao Yuanming's beloved 4th-century fable — a hidden paradise nestled among mountains and rivers. Feng reinterprets this timeless Eastern utopia through a contemporary abstract lens.
Nine Odes Series (2025) Drawn from Qu Yuan's Nine Songs (九歌), one of the oldest and most celebrated works of Chinese poetry. Large-scale oils that give contemporary voice to the spiritual intensity of ancient verse.
Why Huafei Feng
What makes Feng's work rare is a balance few artists achieve: he is deeply rooted in thousands of years of Chinese culture — calligraphy, classical poetry, philosophical imagery — yet speaks in a visual language that is entirely contemporary and internationally fluent. His canvases need no translation. The energy of each brushstroke, the tension of color, the rhythm of composition — these cross every border of language and culture, reaching the viewer directly. This is the most precious quality of his art: Chinese roots, universal language.
